Rick Wakeman - Return to the Red Planet (Madfish)

A musical sequel that can easily upstage the original.

Return to the Red Planet is truly a beautiful record. Rick Wakeman definitely feels re-energized since The English Rock Ensemble came into his life. While this is still very much a keyboard-driven album, having a solid band around him elevates the overall feel of the compositions. There is room to breathe, and the music flows with a sense of harmony that makes the entire experience all the more rewarding.

Wakeman’s analog sound is as charming as ever, not to mention that he remains one of the most unique keyboard players around. There are many sides to Rick Wakeman, but here he focuses on a sound that is consistent, cohesive, and very much connected to the album’s theme. There are moments when his keyboard wizardry shines through, reminding us of the virtuoso at work, but for the most part, the album has a strong band feel. Mollie Marriott graces the record with her vocals, adding an eccentric depth and character that further enriches the project.

Return to the Red Planet unfolds naturally, with the band seemingly achieving greatness at ease. Nothing feels forced, and that is one of the album’s greatest strengths. Wakeman clearly leads the show, but there is plenty of space for the other musicians to contribute, allowing a variety of sounds to come together in a remarkably balanced fashion. It all sounds very impressive. The songs are melodic and engaging, maintaining the listener’s interest from beginning to end. The arrangements also bring an added sense of mystery, giving the music an almost dangerous edge in places. There is a wonderful balance between accessibility and adventure, and the result is a record that feels alive throughout.

Rick Wakeman is definitely onto something special here. Both albums will undoubtedly be looked upon as late-career classics, and this sequel might even have the edge over its predecessor. Who knows? Wakeman might just create a very special live presentation built around the Red Planet theme. Wouldn’t that be something?

In the meantime, let’s enjoy this special gem from a world-class player!
