Gary John Barden – Empowered Emotions (Frontiers)

Gary John Barden is back with a brand-new album, and the veteran rocker proves he still has plenty to offer. Empowered Emotions is a fun, engaging record that captures an artist enjoying himself and doing what he does best. Barden isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel or rewrite the rules of rock. He’s simply rocking on his own terms, and that’s precisely where this album finds its strength.

When Barden burst onto the scene in 1980 as the vocalist for the Michael Schenker Group (MSG), his distinctive voice and fresh approach made an immediate impression. Forty-six years later, he may no longer possess the same vocal firepower, but his identity remains unmistakable. He has settled into a powerful midrange that suits his voice well, bringing to mind Ian Gillan’s more recent vocal approach. The original color is still there, and so is that unmistakable Barden charisma. It’s the personality behind the voice that drives Empowered Emotions forward.

At its core, this is an album about enjoying the music and reconnecting with an artist whose legacy is firmly established. His years with MSG earned Barden a lasting place in hard rock history, and Empowered Emotions builds on that legacy without leaning too heavily on nostalgia. The record delivers catchy songs, infectious rhythms, and genuine emotion. Better still, repeated listens reveal new details and make the album’s appeal even stronger.

There’s no shortage of solid rockers here. “Maasai Enkai” makes an impression, while “Hit the Ground Running” brings a distinctly Van Halen-inspired flavor. The title track is another highlight, and the quality remains consistent throughout. Strong songwriting, confident performances, and a handful of well-chosen guest appearances add depth and energy to the overall sound.

Empowered Emotions doesn’t need to break new ground to succeed. Its appeal lies in its classic rock sensibility, memorable songs, and the unmistakable presence of a singer who knows exactly who he is. Once the album pulls you in, the music flows naturally, and the experience becomes all about the riffs, the melodies, and the sheer pleasure of hearing Gary Barden doing what he does best.

A confident, heartfelt return from a hard rock veteran who still has something to say—and, more importantly, knows how to rock.
