Tokyo Blade – Time is the Fire (Dissonance Productions)

Tokyo Blade made some great records in the past, but they also made some not-so-great ones as well. They must be doing something right in order to stay alive and still be releasing records. What they continuously do have is a great sound that is very British, and that always made them stay apart.

“Time is the Fire” starts very strong, but as the record progresses, they sort of lose the momentum. The songs are still good and very much part of the whole, but they just don’t rock as hard. The album is still a cool listen all the way through, but if you’re looking for excitement and thrills, at one point, it sort of evaporates.

Alan Marsh and Andy Boulton enjoy a very healthy writing relationship, and what they do is quite unique. All they need to do is keep their hand on the pulse and focus on the songs that move swiftly. They certainly have that ability. Putting too many backing tracks on the album does not create a good balance.

“Time is the Fire” is an album that has its own spirit, and there are moments when its monotony is just perfect. Then there are times when there is a need for some more upbeat excitement, and the album falls short. The performances are absolutely brilliant here, but the affection for this record needs time to develop.
